What is an ‘Agribusiness’?

According to Wikipedia an ‘Agribusiness’ is defined as the business of agricultural production.

It includes agrichemicals, breeding, crop production (farming and contract farming), distribution, farm machinery, processing, and seed supply, as well as marketing and retail sales. All agents of the food and fiber value chain and those institutions that influence it are part of the agribusiness system.

Agribusiness in Australia

According to the National Farmers Federation 2012 ‘Farm Facts’ Report, Australia consisted of 134,148 farms of which 120,112 farms were solely dedicated to agricultural production and therefore deemed as ‘Agribusinesses’.

These farms range from large broad acre operations through to smaller market garden style farms and everything in between including aquaculture.
